Winchester College, New Hall

New Hall was built in the 1960’s as a venue for concerts, lectures and examinations for Winchester College. Cole Jarman provided acoustic consultancy in 2009-14 for the £4m scheme to refurbish and extend the listed building.

The performance space was substantially modified, with the inclusion of operable bleacher seats, new mechanical ventilation and changes in room geometry to maintain and enhance the acoustic response of the hall. Cole Jarman worked closely with the architect from an early stage through to completion to achieve the maximum acoustic potential for the scheme, which remains in keeping with the surrounding buildings of major historic interest.

We had our first rehearsal in the new venue on Monday evening and the acoustics have been transformed to create a warm but clear sound. The hall itself looks magnificent.
