RSK Acoustics was instructed to establish noise levels within operational areas of the call centre. This comprised measurements of ambient noise throughout each floor and measurements of typical noise levels experienced in-ear during calls. The measurement results were used to derive typical noise levels that call workers were subjected to during the course of their work.

Measurements were undertaken in accordance with guidance in the HSE document “Controlling Noise at Work”. To carry out the assessment of in-ear noise, an ‘artificial ear’ was used in conjunction with the model of headset issued to employees.
